The New Disney Dream
To some of us, 1999 must seem like not that long ago. But in the cruise line industry, to have your newest ship be 11 years old is practically unheard of. Disney Cruise Line has just launched their newest ship, the Dream, and it is their first new ship in 11 years.
The Dream carries 4,000 passengers, and is 50% larger than its predecessor. Built along the classic lines of a 1930’s ocean liner, the ship is decorated in an art deco style. Guests enter on deck 3 and are greeted by Admiral Duck, the center of the three story atrium.
Since 1999, technology has changed so much and the Dream embraces these changes. One such addition is in one of the restaurants, the Animators Palette. During dinner, the restaurant monitors are transformed into “windows” that look out on an animated underwater world. “Crush”, the sea turtle, appears swimming from window to window. He has conversations with the guests as they eat. Another addition is in the inside cabins. Using high definition cameras placed on the exterior of the ship, live video is streamed into magical portholes allowing guests to see views of the outdoors.
In addition to new technology, the Dream offers a major upgrade in ship wide amenities and cuisine. Most staterooms feature a split bath that is actually two small bathrooms. One has a toilet and sink and the other has a shower, bath and sink. All staterooms also have an iPod docking station, mini-refrigerator, safe and premium toiletries. For adults, the Dream has its very first two-star Michelin chef offering a la carte meals and an eight-course wine pairing meal.
The entertainment onboard offers three live production shows featuring Disney characters every day. In addition, there is a state-of-the-art theatre onboard showing first-run Disney films. And of course, live Disney characters are onboard all throughout the ship.
The Disney Dream sails alternating three and four night cruises from Orlando to Nassau and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. During the summer, the ship will sail four and five night itineraries with two stops at Castaway Cay. In 2012, its sister ship, the Fantasy, will make her debut giving families two choices.
